Operational Risk Specialist

Details of the Role:

Duration: 6 months, with potential for extension

Location: On-site in London (at least 3 days per week)

Rate: Daily Rate Inside IR35

Role:

Reporting to the Capital Markets Head of Risk and Change Management, this first-line risk role within the Banking and Markets business is responsible for identifying, measuring, and escalating key business risks. The Risk Specialist will collaborate with business unit stakeholders to identify opportunities to mitigate inherent risks, supporting the development of frameworks and enhanced standards. This position involves working with subject matter experts within the business and support areas, as well as partnering with second-line risk and compliance functions. Strong communication skills and a deep understanding of the Capital Markets business are preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and lead monthly forums to encourage open discussions on inherent risks, changes in risk profiles, and mitigating controls.

  • Identify high-risk areas, highlight key controls and gaps, and report findings to senior stakeholders.

  • Support the development of frameworks, enhanced standards, and related procedural documentation to strengthen the business's risk mitigation efforts.

  • Lead forums to review, advise on, challenge, and document changes to Capital Markets products, including new products, enhancements, and process changes.

  • Foster open dialogue with business partners, acting as a trusted advisor on risk-related issues.

  • Serve as a liaison between the business unit and second-line risk and compliance functions.

  • Represent the Risk function on Steering Committees and Working Groups.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, time management, and planning abilities, with a collaborative approach to handling multiple competing priorities.

  • Ability to make independent decisions while also being a team player and effective communicator to resolve issues appropriately.

  • Inquisitive and enthusiastic approach to problem-solving.

  • Leadership and organizational skills to direct activities across multiple business units.

  • Several years of experience in financial services, with a focus on operational risk, controls, or audit.

  • Strong understanding of audit, risk, and operational management concepts, with the ability to interpret the impact of decisions and identify potential problem areas.

  • Confidence and expertise to advise management and the business.

  • Knowledge of Capital Markets (or a business within Capital Markets).

  • A college or university degree is preferred.
